The Center for Media Studies is a unit dedicated to collaborative and interdisciplinary research, housed in the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities of the Alberto Hurtado University. We investigate mediality as a multidimensional phenomenon, with a focus on its role in shaping practices, objects, subjects and knowledge, particularly in Latin America.
Mediality is a determining factor in the emergence and configuration of our societies and cultures. The term refers to a complex, multidimensional and transversal phenomenon in which material and technical aspects, as well as symbolic and cultural aspects, are intertwined. It encompasses a field that includes both traditional media devices and processes as well as new media.
Our principal task is to generate critical reflections on the medial phenomenon. We intend to train researchers, strengthen international networks devoted to media studies, and foster discussions, based on a medial approach, concerning the current state and the challenges of Arts and Humanities.
Through the Center for Media Studies, we seek to offer a forum for debate on media-related issues that stands as a benchmark in Latin America.
